An Adventure

As a kid in the late 70’s,and with an alcoholic father,I could come and go as I pleased. We didn’t have to worry about anyone trying to kidnap us,or harm us.These were the days ,when as a boy,I would explore the woods across the street from my house. My friends and I would climb trees, play in the creek, set up targets for our BB guns, build a clubhouse,etc..

On this particular summer, day things didn’t go so well.It was a beautiful day;there was a nice breeze blowing and not a cloud in the sky;one of those days that you wish would last forever. We were working on our club house, making notches in the trees that we had cut down with an ax that someone had “borrowed”from his father. The club house we were building was more like a log cabin. It was pretty nice considering we were just kids with no tools.David, who was my best friend at the time, made a suggestion that we st op working on the club house and go exploring. This was the beginning of a scary journey, but adventurous.

We set out on a journey that would take us deep into the woods,a long way from home, from the comfort and safety of our club house;a place we knew very well, for the unknown. As we hiked through the woods we did all the things that boys of 9 to 10 years old do.We climbed the tallest tree we could find, daring each other to go farther. We came along the creek, which was deep in some spots,so we took a dip.As we were swimming we would look for salamanders in the shallow spots, and even found a snake. We could tell it was not poisonous, but it was fun watching it strike at us when one of the guys poked a stick at it.

In the meantime,we were getting further from home and very lost.We were having such a good time,we didn’t realize this until someone in our group said so.It was Tommy who spoke up and said,”Does anybody know where we are?”and I said,”No I don’t!”.This was when the fear set in.We had been in these woods many times, but never this far in.Now,in a group of kids there’s always one who is skiddish, the week one,and his name was John.He started crying, saying,”we’re lost and we’re never going to find our way home”.This caused a panic in the group, and everyone of us,for a moment, considered this possibility.

I was the one who shined at this moment and took control;an unforgettable moment in my life.I told everybody not to panic and we will find our way home.I started to retrace our steps, remember the way we had hiked.By some inner compass,GOD,or just a good sense of direction,I led us out of those woods that day.I admit I was scared at times, but I managed to stay calm.We survived our ordeal that day and never went too far into the woods again. This I consider an accomplishment, one I have often thought about over the years. In a way it keeps me grounded in scary situations.

Reflection on Essay 1

I admit I was a little intimidated when I first walked into the classroom Tuesday, when I saw everyone at the computers around the room.I’m not very good at typing and I thought that we were going to have to type the essay on the computers,it being a timed essay,I was sure I was doomed. To my surprise,Dr.Crowther said I could write it out, which eased my anxiety.I believe I did ok on the essay,as far as my writing, but I wish I had more time.Writing under a time restraint is not so easy. The topic I picked was teaching someone about something that I’ve learned and I don’t know if I was comfortable doing so.I believe I could have done better with the topic of talking about one of my strengths.I believe I have a lot of strengths. But,I chose this topic because of the job that I work on,in which I pass on my knowledge  to customers every day.It is very satisfying to show someone how to do a project,in which they have no clue on how to do,and come back the next day with a good report saying that what I told them to do worked. They fixed their problem, without having to hire someone to do it for them, with the knowledge that I passed on to them. The young man that I wrote about in my essay was actually my stepson and I enjoyed teaching him some of the ins and outs of doing construction. He was a quick learner and he also enjoyed learning what I do everyday.I wasn’t able to convey a lot of our adventures on the job sight because of the amount of time we had to write the essay.I also don’t believe that I was able to get a good close on the story,to get my point across. Before I knew it,Dr. Crowther was saying we had 10 minutes left.Whatever corrections that Dr.Crowther puts on my essay I will definitely use for future writing. It’s been a long time since I’ve written anything down to be graded.

About Me

Hi,I’m David and this is a story about me.I was born in Warner Robins,GA a little south of Atlanta to two parents and three brothers.I am the youngest of four boys, which was good when someone picked on me because they would defend me,but also bad because they could and would pick on me all the time. When I was around three my parents moved to Forest Park,GA,in which I found out was my dads fault. We were in Forest Park a couple of years when my parents divorced, and my dad ended up with custody of us.Consequently, this was not such a good thing because my dad was an alcoholic and wasn’t really there as a father, but he was not abusive,he just wasn’t there. When I was fourteen my dad married my step-mother and this is when stability came into our lives, well me and my brother next to me,the other two brothers had already moved out.As a result of this,I began to excel in school and made A’s and B’s from 7th grade until I graduated.I graduated top 5% of my class with awards in math and science, plus I received awards in art when I was in 11th grade.I was a highly motivated 18 year old who wanted to go straight to college after high school, and even set up an interview with a Devry representative, but my parents would not work with me on this.As a result of this,I moved in with my next to the oldest brother with whom I had been working  during the summers building houses. The money I had been saving I used to help with a business that me and my brother started. This turned out to be a bad investment, because my brother screwed me.This happened on a Friday and by that Monday I was in Washington DC painting a Montgomery Wards department store. For two years after this I was traveling all over the United States as a painter. It was fun while it lasted, until the company I was working for went bankrupt, because they were not paying their bills at the paint stores we were getting our supplies from. This is when I moved back in with my parents and went to work for a trucking company.Around this time is when I met a wonderful woman and was married. We were married for 19 years, but in the last two years she got sick and died in 2010.My life has been a mess since she’s been gone, but I’ve managed to hang on.I miss her tremendously and I’m learning to live without her.At this point in my life I am pursuing my dream of going to college, actually I’m living my dream and it feels great. My wife new of my dream of course, and I bet she’s looking down on me right now and rejoicing.Well,I hope you enjoyed this short condensed version of my life.Maybe someday I’ll write the long version.
